Second, many of these programs (such as the Sprint Ninja program) feature employees helping customers having problems. They are strictly voluntary, employees who participate get no preferential treatment (e.g., promotions, salary increases, etc.), and those who do participate are never required to share anything they don’t want to. (Considering there is no shortage of people who call themselves advocates of white supremacy, anti-Semitism, and a host of other vile beliefs, I have a problem seeing advocacy even in this definition as solely a noble calling.) I have yet to see an internal program-whether it’s labeled “ambassador” or “advocacy”-that is as crassly commercial as my colleague paints them.įirst of all, I have never seen one of these programs in which any employee is compelled to do anything. The most troubling of the assertions about internal advocacy programs is that they are cynical ploys by companies to enlist employees in shameless marketing communications, thus demeaning the cherished notion of advocacy as a social justice concept. There are plenty of case studies of internal staff touting their advocacy programs, like this one from Rackspace.Įven organizations like IABC, which represent communicators, have no problem referring to employee advocacy, as they did in this Twitter chat and this article. When I hear from a company looking for help, however, it’s the company communicator who asks if I have experience with internal advocacy programs, not the other way around. That, my colleague says, is because mercenary consultants selling their services are pushing the term. I also pointed out that the term “employee ambassador program” about 1,900 Google search results, while gets more than 10 times that number, about 20,400. In fact, ‘s first definition (for the verb form of the word) is “to speak or write in favor of support or urge by argument recommend publicly.” Merriam-Webster‘s third definition of the noun is “one that support or promotes the interests of another.” The OED says the verb means, “Publicly recommend or support.” I have not been able to find a dictionary that does not define an advocate solely as one who supports or defends a person or cause. Somehow, referring to employee advocacy is a belittling of that kind of advocacy rather than just employing an entirely acceptable synonym. ![]() My colleague’s objection is based on her view that the word “advocate” is confined to the noble act of standing up for a cause, such as a mental health advocate or a victim’s rights advocate. In a post on the internal communications site IC Kollectif, I said (as part of a longer passage), “(Internal communicators) need to be the drivers of employee advocacy while steering the organization through times of crisis and change.” I raise the issue because of a back-and-forth I had with a fellow communicator who took exception to my use of the word. It’s little surprise that highly engaged employees are inclined to promote their companies’ positions, which fits one definition of the word “advocacy.” But it’s not the only definition. Consider the blowback Kellogg’s got when it blacklisted alt-right “news” site from its advertising because it conflicted with the company’s values of inclusion: Breitbart launched a boycott of Kellogg’s products and began publishing defamatory stories. Where most organizations once stayed silent rather than risk the ire of some customers and other stakeholders, leaders recognize that stakeholders now make a purchase, investment, and employment decisions based on a company’s demonstrated commitment to their values and their resolve to make the world a better place.Įven company values statements-once worthy of little more than a yawn-can now provoke hostile reactions. ![]() In recent months we have seen companies take sides on transgender bathroom rights, religious liberty laws, global warming, and a variety of other causes. Increasingly, companies are voicing positions on issues that affect society. ![]() These were highly engaged employees who took it upon themselves to help people in their networks understand a complicated and misunderstood issue. The Society wasn’t selling anything, nor did it enroll employees in trying to help pitch anything. When staffers at the Internet Society took to their personal social media accounts to voice their support for the Society’s position on handing off oversight of the Internet’s domain name to ICANN, they weren’t pitching anything.

Exposing the connection of Steward's work to US government policy begins to fill the gap regarding anthropology's connection to colonialism in North America, and prompts a serious reconsideration of the discipline's method. Archival material regarding Steward's involvement in the Uintah Ute, Dockets 44 & 45 before the Indian Claims Commission, forms the data for this exposition. Third, Steward's evolutionary theory is shown to have been designed as an explicit counter to Boas' method, belying a Spencerian biological analogy, and placing him outside of the "Americanist tradition." Finally, the culmination of Steward's method and theory, heralded as an objective approach to understanding Indigenous Peoples social organisation and the "scientific" method of anthropology, is exposed as a programmatic of the US Department of Justice in proceedings before the Indian Claims Commission, and showing it as a colonial science. I often don’t follow the specific schedule, but I find it helps if I take some time to think about what I’m going to try to accomplish, as well as explicitly scheduling out time for checking email so I’m less tempted to do that while working. I write down tasks that I’d like to accomplish that day and schedule them in chunks of time. I use a notebook called the Emergent Task Planner to structure my day. That being said, what I’d really like is some content system that lets me organize by a topic and by date, and VoodooPad only does by topic, but it’s the closest I’ve been able to find. This means I can paste in images that are rendered inline, and I can render code and terminal output in fixed-width font, and my notes in variable-width font. I like how it’s free-form, and not just plain text. It mainly has two uses: context for each project I’m working on (e.g., pastes of recent error messages), and reference pages for things like urls and commonly used code snippets or commands that I often forget. In particular, I have an on-hold “Someday” task which acts as a catch-all for things I don’t want to forget but that I don’t plan on doing in the near term.
While programming is fun, there’s also the manual control mode, great for annoying the cat, or just learning how to manually control the BOLT. With this, you could imagine a game of catch, enhanced by lights, sound and all programmed by you. There’s even an ambient light sensor, which would allow your program to respond differently based on the time of day, that’s brilliant. One of my favourite options is the ability to detect movement (via the accelerometer) and respond. Once you get the hang of building programs, you’re really only limited by the space you have and your imagination. As an example, roll forward for 2 seconds, move at 270 degrees for 1.5s, show a love heart on the display, say “I love you”, then roll back for 3 seconds and finish by turning the display red). While there’s example programs you can access, as well as ones from an online community of Sphero users, the ones you create yourself, are the ones you’ll remember. Photo albums come in a range of sizes, from compact albums large enough to hold a single, standard (four by six inch) photo per page, to huge A3 or A2 tomes. If you don't particularly like the appearance of leather, fabric-covered photo albums are a durable alternative. The majority of "leather-bound" photo albums are actually bound with faux leather, which is almost as durable, cheaper, and suitable for use by vegans and people who avoid using certain animal products for religious reasons. In today's market, photo albums bound in real leather are uncommon. More common are either fabric-bound or leather-bound options. Some photo albums feature thick card covers, which is perhaps the least durable option. You don't want to be left with a load of blank pages you'll be unlikely to fill, but you don't want to run out of space, either.Ĭhoose a quality cover material and your photo album will last longer. Choose an album with an appropriate amount of pages for the photos you want to display. A 40-page, or 40-side, album has 20 double-sided pages, so essentially 40 useable pages. Photo albums should list the number of pages they contain - these are sometimes referred to as sides. These let you open the binding to add new pages, remove pages, or rearrange pages if you decide the snapshots would look better in a different order. This can be remedied, however, by choosing a concealed wire-bound album, which looks from the outside like a case-bound book, but spiral binding is hidden inside.Īlthough they're not as popular, you can also find ring-bound photo albums. It's easier to lay a spiral-bound album completely flat, but they don't look quite as neat on a bookshelf as case-bound options. Wire and spiral-bound photo albums feature pages mounted on a wire spiral, much like a reporter's notebook. Book-bound offerings are more durable, which is ideal if you're looking to make a photo album to pass down to your kids and grandkids. With glue-bound albums, the pages are simply glued into place, whereas book-bound options are stitched.Case-bound albums can further be divided into glue-bound and book-bound options. Some look neater than others and some are more durable.Ĭase-bound photo albums look like hardback books and appear neat and professional. You can find photo albums with a range of different binding types. Key considerations for selecting a photo album While they allow you total flexibility of layout, and the option to switch and reposition photos later, it does take longer to fix photos in place using photo corners. If you like the idea of being free to place your photos anywhere on the page and in any orientation, but don't want to stick them down permanently, a quality album with photo corners is your best bet. You can also trap dust, hairs, and other things under the plastic, which is especially problematic if you have furry pets around. The other drawback is that the adhesive yellows over time and can be damaging to the photos, so this isn't the best type of photo album for passing down the generations. However, once the photos are affixed to the page, you generally can't peel them off, so you need to get the layout right the first time. ![]() What's great about self-adhesive photo albums is that it's easy to be creative with the photo layout and it’s quick to stick photos in place. To affix photos to the album, you peel back the clear plastic and stick your photos directly to the adhesive page, then stick the clear plastic back over the top when you're done. ![]() Self-adhesive photo albums have sticky pages covered in a clear sheet of plastic. It's also impossible to be creative with the layout of a slip-in photo album, since the pockets are fixed. You can do it, of course, but you'll need to turn the album to look at a portrait photo on a page of landscape snaps, which detracts from the viewing experience. But, on the downside, all the pockets are orientated the same way, which makes it difficult to store a mixture of portrait and landscape photos. It's quick and easy to store photos in a slip-in album and allows for easy rearranging of your snaps. Perhaps the most common variety on the market, slip-in photo albums feature fixed pockets in which to put your photos. Some photo albums have space for notes, which is great for adding pieces of information about when or where photos were taken, or even fun anecdotes about days out. How-to Install Node.
